Komunikasi antarbudaya merupakan proses pertukaran pesan yang melibatkan individu atau kelompok dari latar belakang budaya yang berbeda. Dalam proses ini, simbol dan bahasa memainkan peran sentral sebagai sarana penyampaian makna serta ekspresi identitas dan nilai-nilai budaya. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji fungsi, tantangan, dan dinamika penggunaan simbol dan bahasa dalam komunikasi antarbudaya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif-kualitatif dengan metode studi pustaka, yakni menelaah berbagai literatur ilmiah yang relevan untuk mengidentifikasi pola dan hambatan komunikasi lintas budaya. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa hambatan komunikasi sering kali muncul akibat perbedaan persepsi terhadap simbol-simbol verbal dan nonverbal, seperti stereotip budaya, polarisasi makna, dan kecenderungan melakukan evaluasi statis terhadap kelompok lain. Simbol dan bahasa tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai alat komunikasi teknis, tetapi juga mencerminkan pandangan dunia, sistem nilai, dan struktur sosial suatu komunitas. Kesimpulannya, keberhasilan komunikasi antarbudaya sangat bergantung pada sensitivitas budaya dan kemampuan individu dalam memahami serta menafsirkan simbol dan bahasa secara kontekstual. Oleh karena itu, kompetensi komunikasi antarbudaya menjadi aspek penting dalam membangun relasi harmonis dalam masyarakat multikultural.
